Basic Information about Literature Reviews

A "literature review" is a generalized term that can apply to most reviews of biomedical literature, including systematic and scoping reviews. When referring to a literature review type, it is also considered a "narrative" review.

Literature Reviews can take 2 months+ and can be done independently.

Literature Reviews are useful for:

  • Searching for and finding relevant literature on a topic
  • Looking at methodologies, models, theories, etc. that have been applied to a topic
  • Limited time to conduct research
  • Rationale for new research

Focus of a Literature Review:

  • To summarize and synthesize the arguments and ideas of others without adding new contributions
