Copyright Guidance on ETD

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (ETD)

Outline

While Publishers own the copyright of a journal article,  copyright of a dissertation typically remains on the author.

To a publish a journal article based on your dissertation:

  • Refer the publisher guideline for revision and formatting instructions
  • Some publishers needs portions to be rewritten, refined, or having new results.

You might also need to embargo the dissertation, if you are concerned about the time lines.

Most importantly, you should inform the editor at the time of submission that your article is based on your thesis, mention when and where it has been published, and state your willingness to provide a copy if required.

Be aware of the risk of:
  • Self-Plagiarism
  • Duplication and overlap
  • Less acceptability by publishers
