EndNote 21 essential information

Sync EndNote Desktop with EndNote Online

EndNote allows you to synchronize your EndNote (desktop) library with EndNote Online.  This means, the references in both sets will be automatically synchronized and are the same. Syncing also allows you to share an EndNote desktop library with your colleagues.

You will need to:

  1. Create an EndNote Online account or use the Web of Science personal account to login
  2. Set up the Sync Preference by clicking Edit > Preferences > Enable Sync
  3. To Sync a library, use the Sync Configuration from the left top menu and Choose Sync Now

Share library to collaborate

To share a library:

  • Go to File > Share and enter the email address/s of the person/s you want to share a library. You can also use the Share button from the top menu to invite colleagues

To stop sharing a library:

  • Go to File > Share > click on the Gear icon > Remove 

Important Note

  • Your sync library can be shared with up to 500 other EndNote users on version X7.2 or later
  • The email addresses of the invitees should be the same that they registered in EndNote Online.

Email EndNote Library

Step 1: Compress your EndNote Library file:

  • Open the EndNote Library.
  • From the "File" menu, select "Compressed Library (.enlx)" for PC and Mac. Choose the options to share, i.e, groups, entire library, with attachments etc. 
  • Name the EndNote Compressed Library. 
  • Create or Save the Library to create a zip file (filename.enlx)
