What is EndNote?

EndNote X9

EndNote is a citation management program that allows us to:

  • Build and organize a database of references
  • Attach, read and annotate PDFs to references
  • Cite your sources in your paper with a touch of a button
  • Share references with colleagues to collaborate

 

Downloading & Installing EndNote X9 - Windows & Macintosh

 STEPS

  1. Close all Microsoft products, especially MS Word that is running on your computer before you start downloading.
  2. Uninstall the previous versions of EndNote that is running in your computer

  For your personal computers:

  1. Download EndNote for your personal computers Mac or Windows
  2. Authenticate with your KUMC username and password
  3. Select the EndNote for your computer i.e Mac vs. Windows

    Windows:

  1. ENX9Inst.exe zipped folder file will download
  2. Right click and select Extract All
  3. The files will be extracted to a selected folder such as your desktop or documents.
  4. Click next and follow the prompts to EndNote setup
  5. Agree licensing terms and follow the prompts to Finish installation.

    Mac:

  1. EndNoteX9Installer.dmg file will download
  2. Click save (on your desktop or documents)
  3. Open Install EndNote X9 App from the prompt. You can also drag and drop the dmg file to the  Applications folder to install.
  4. Agree licensing terms and follow the prompts to complete installation.

EndNote X8 and X9 - Uninstall EndNote X8

EndNote X9 or X8 is still running on your computer?

It is suggested that you uninstall EndNtoe X9 or any previous versions before installing EndNote 20.

Windows:

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Windows XP: Click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Windows Vista/7/8/10: Click on Programs > Programs and Features. 
  4. Choose "EndNote XX” (where XX is the version) from the list and click on Uninstall.

Mac:

  1. Open the EndNote program.
  2. Click on the EndNote menu and select the Customizer.
  3. Click the Uninstall option at the bottom of this menu. When this is complete, it will remove all external components.
  4. Click Quit.
  5. Drag the EndNote folder from the Applications folder to the Trash.
  6. Empty the Trash.

Uninstalling the previous versions of EndNote may not effect your EndNote library. You can also make a backup copy of your current EndNote library using the following commands.

  • File > Compressed Library for libraries smaller than 5GB
  • File > Save a Copy for larger libraries

Tips

  • Upgrade to the latest versions of EndNote - while you are opening EndNote software, if a popup appear to upgrade the software, follow the prompts. Upgrading to the latest versions will help you to troubleshoot compatibility issues.
  • EndNote libraries should be saved in your computer's hard drive, not in any cloud based storage such as Dropbox, iCloud, OneDrive etc.
  • While creating an EndNote library, EndNote create two files, .enl file and a .data file. These files should be saved in the same folder.
