Creating/ Opening EndNote Library

After completing EndNote installation, you will have the following options:

  1. Create a New Library - for creating a new library of references. The default name is My EndNote Library, you can change the name appropriately. You can also create New Library using the following steps:
    • Go to File and choose New
    • Name the Library and Save it on your desktop
  2. Open Library - for choosing a library that is already created. You can also open an existing library using the following steps:
    • Go to File menu
    • Select Open Library and then choose the Library that is saved on your computer.
  3. Open Shared library - for opening a library that is shared with your colleagues
  4. Open Recent - for opening the most recent library that you opened/worked.

Important: Never save an EndNote library in a Cloud based storage such as iCloud, Dropbox, OneDrive etc. This will corrupt your library because of the way the cloud storage syncs with internet. We suggest you save your EndNote library on your desktop.

Direct Export References from Databases

Most databases and journal websites have a function for selecting records and exporting to a citation manager. Always look for the following language: send to, export to citation manager, download to citation manager, etc.

There are several different file types associated with each database.

  • PubMed has .nbib
  • CINAHL has .ris
  • Web of Science has .ciw

Export Citations from PubMed

Important! Always use PubMed from the Dykes Library website http://library.kumc.edu/ in order to access the full texts of articles from the library’s subscription journals.

  1. Execute a search in PubMed
  2. Select the citations you want to export by checking the boxes next to the citations; if no boxes are checked, all references from the page will be selected to exported to Endnote
  3. Click on Send to from the right top of the page
  4. If you continue searching, add the new citations to the Clipboard*, a place where you can keep selected citations temporarily.

 

 

 


 

Browser Actions while Direct Exporting

The exported references will be in your downloads and these actions vary depending the browser you are using. Refer to the below documents for steps, details and screenshots.

Export References from Google Scholar

Steps

You can either export a citation at a time while browsing the results or multiple citations by adding the selected references to 'MyLibrary'

Select and export a citation at a time 

  • Go to Google Sholar from Dykes library database list 
  • Scroll down to the Bibliography manager section.  Select the Show links to import citations into radio button.  Choose Endnote from the dropdown menu. 
  • Click Save. You will not need to perform this step on subsequent visits to Google Scholar
  • Click Import into Endnote link under the citation you wish to import to your EndNote library.
  • A dialog box will appear prompting you to either "Open" or "Save" the file that you are creating.
  • Choose the Open with radio button and select EndNote 

Select and export multiple citations at a time

  • Perform the search
  • Login to your Google account
  • Save the citations you want to export by clicking on the star button of each references listed
  • Go to Mylibrary from the right top corner of the page.
  • Select all the citations using the check box at the top (you can also delete citations at this point using the delete button).
  • Click the export button (a little arrow pointing down)
  • Choose the Open with radio button and select EndNote
