Researching the Medical Education Literature

This guide lists tools and resources for medical education research.

PubMed Access

PubMed can be accessed from the Dykes Library site at https://library.kumc.edu/. Look for the PubMed logo in the left panel. Always start by going to the Library website and clicking on the PubMed link from the main page.

How to Search

Once you are in PubMed you will see a search box at the top of the page. For a basic keyword search, type the word(s) you are searching for in the box, and click Search. PubMed will return results, which can be further filtered by utilizing the Filters on the left side of the page.

Top Ten Journals

If you want to do a PubMed search limited to the ten most cited journals in general and internal medicine, copy and paste this string into the search bar then hit search.

((((((((("Am J Med"[Journal]) OR "N Engl J Med"[Journal]) OR "Lancet"[Journal]) OR "JAMA"[Journal]) OR "BMJ"[Journal]) OR "Cochrane Database Syst Rev"[Journal]) OR "Ann Intern Med"[Journal]) OR "PLoS Med"[Journal]) OR "BMJ Open"[Journal]) OR "Medicine (Baltimore)"[Journal]

Then click the advanced tool under the search bar:

Add the journal string to the top line of your search, then add your keywords or MeSH terms in the line below.

This will limit your search to the top ten most highly cited journals.

If you need to search the top ten journals in a specific field, contact the school librarian (Jacob) and I will send you the search string. If you have strong search skills and want to do it on your own, you can get journal impact rankings and ISSNs from Clarivate Journal Citation Reports.
