What is SNOMED CT?

SNOMED CT is a very comprehensive clinical terminology with identifiers for many different concepts.  It provides a standardized means to facilitate the exchange of clinical phrases and enables automatic interpretation of these phrases.  It is owned and distributed by SNOMED International. Where can I obtain SNOMED CT?

SNOMED CT is licensed for use in member countries.  The U.S. National Library of Medicine is the U.S. member of SNOMED CT.  Licensees of the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) Metathesaurus have access to SNOMED CT. Sign up for a license to use SNOMED CT on the UMLS Metathesaurus website.

SNOMED International provides many useful resources on SNOMED CT including a a series of short courses such as an open access starter tutorial called "Introduction to SNOMED CT" which is 16 minutes in length.  SNOMED International has launched a series of more in-depth managed access courses that are also available.  See SNOMED CT Course Catalogue.

IHTSDO is now SNOMED International

As of January 1, 2017 International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) adopted the trading name of SNOMED International and moved their headquarters from Copenhagen to London.
