NIH Public Access Policy

A guide to assist faculty and research administrators with the policy details and resources available for complying with the NIH Public Access Policy.

Step 1: Create a MyNCBI account

  1. Visit PubMed home page, and look in the upper right corner for Sign in to NCBI
  2. Choose the Register for a NCBI Account option (below the Sign In button)
  3. After completing the form, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from NCBI - you must confirm your registration by clicking the link provided in the e-mail
  4. When you are ready to use the account, Sign in to NCBI with the username and password you just created

Step 2: Link MyNCBI account to eRA Commons account

eRA Commons is an online interface where signing officials, principal investigators, trainees and post-docs at institutions/organizations can access and share administrative information relating to NIH research grants. Be sure to link your My NCBI account to your eRA Commons account for quicker manuscript processing.  (see Word document for instructions)

Optional: Delegate Access to My Bibliography

If you wish to assign others to manage your bibliography and submit manuscripts on your behalf, they will need their own My NCBI account and you will have to delegate access to them. (see Word document for instructions)
