The year 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Kansas Medical Center. The history of anesthesia at KUMC begins with the founding of Bell Memorial Hospital in 1906, but the use of anesthesia in Kansas City extends back even further. Around the KUMC and TUKHS campus, there are several opportunities to learn about this history.

On October 16th, 2025 (Ether Day), the  Clendening Library & Museum will debut a new exhibit titled, “Anecdotes in Anesthesia." This exhibit explores the history of anesthesia through memorable stories about nine of its most colorful practitioners. This exhibit can be found in the Clendening Foyer on the first floor of Robinson through Fall 2026.

For a more comprehensive view, Dr. Anthony Kovac and Department of Anesthesiology have created a display documenting the history and evolution of anesthesia administration at KUMC and the University of Kansas Health System. The exhibition illustrates (in timeline fashion) milestones and firsts in the anesthesiology department with text, photos, events, and individuals who were responsible for important achievements and contributions from the past to the present. This can be found outside the Department of Anesthesia on the first floor of Bell Hospital.

The third location where you can find historical vignettes about the history of anesthesia is in the Department of Anesthesia offices on the 2nd floor of Sudler. The current display features Dr. Frank E. O’Neil’s obstetrical bag, and the anesthetic equipment he carried with him on house calls.
